Combination of Natural Supplements as Adjunct Cancer Therapy

I often get questions about which and how many supplements to chose from this list of 70 natural anticancer substances. Some cancers are very curable, like testicular cancer which has a 10-year survival rate of almost 100%. In such cases you probably shouldn't take anything outside standard medical treatment! However, if prognosis is considerably less favorable it makes sense to think about combining standard therapy with a healthier lifestyle and diet, supplements or alternative therapies. The emphasis here is on trying to enhance standard care, not delay, or substitute any part of the conventional medical protocol because, in many cases, the decision to opt out of (additional) conventional treatments seems to worsen outcome.

But there's no doubt it is also possible to significantly improve outcome with natural products, as this randomized study with aloe arborescens in patients with metastatic cancer, and many other studies have shown. Unfortunately, it seems that very often there's little or no follow through when a readily available natural product shows great potential in cancer treatment.

That said, I've made a shorter list of supplements, you could call it my top 20(-ish) of natural anticancer supplements. The main criteria used in this selection are: scientific evidence of efficacy, safety, action against many types of cancer, different mechanisms of anticancer activity, possible synergies.
  1. Bovine Tracheal Cartilage: In 1972 Dr.Prudden started a clinical study treating terminally ill cancer patients with bovine tracheal cartilage. He treated 31 patients and all but one far exceeded life expectancy. Bovine tracheal cartilage is very safe to use, and has virtually no side-effects. 9 gram/day (in 3x 3gr doses) followed by a 3gr/maintenance dose. Cost: ≈ $3,7/day.
  2. Artemisinin: 200 - 500 mg once or twice a day on empty stomach or 2 hours after last meal, and with cod liver oil for better absorption. Intermittent dosing (4-5 days on/2-3 days off) 6 up to 24 months. Alternative: Artesunate ** Cost: ≈ $3,3/day at high dose.
  3. Honokiol: 1-3 gr/day in 2 or 3 divided doses. Honokiol+Magnolol>95% Cost: ≈ $1,2/day for 2gr/day or HonoPure ≈ $6,8/day for 2gr/day
  4. Citric Acid: 0.05 to 0.1g/kg/day with water and with meals (in  2 or 3 divided doses). Cost: ≈ $0,11/day for 5gr/day.
  5. Curcumin4-8gr/day, take with meals. 4 week cycles (4 weeks On/1 or 2 weeks Off). Up to 24 months. Cost: ≈ $1,15/day for 3gr/day.
  6. →Berberine: 500 - 1500 mg/day 4 days per week during 6-8 week cycles, take with meals. Cost: ≈ $1,13/day for 1000mg/day
  7. →ECGC: 800mg/day. 400mg twice daily. For best absorption take with filtered water(not mineral water) and with Omega 3 fish oil supplement(take the omega 3 first, then the EGCg), as this can also increase bioavailability and may enhance its efficacy. Cost: ≈ $0,19/day
  8. →Ursolic acid: 0,5- 1gr/day divided in 2 doses (breakfast, dinner). Take with some coconut oil for better absorption. 4 week cycles (4 weeks On/1 or 2 weeks Off). Cost: ≈ $1,7/day for 0,5/gr/day
  9. Turky Tail: Trametes or coriolus versicolor, 4 g twice daily. Cost: ≈ $3/day
  10. Panax Ginseng: 800-2000mg/day (in divided doses, morning, afternoon). Cost: ≈ $0,25/day for 1500mg/day
  11. C-phycocyanin: 0.8-1.6 gr/day in 2 or 3 divided doses or 4-8 g Spirulina/day (Spirulina is about 20% C-phycocyanin by weight.) Cost: ≈ $1/day.
  12. Jiaogulan: 5-20mg/kg/day (1 kg =2.20462 lb) in 4 week cycles (4 weeks On/1 or 2 weeks Off). Take between meals. Cost: ≈ $0,73/day for 750mg/day
  13. D-limonene: 0.5-3gr/day, in divided doses.
  14. Melatonin: 3-15mg/day at night.  Cost: ≈ $0,3/day for 9mg/day
  15. Black cumin seed oil: 3-4 x 500mg caps./day, or if you can stand the taste, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of the oil (with or before breakfast). You can mix the oil in some oranje juice.
  16. Salvia militiorrhiza: contains Tanshinone IIA. 1 tablet twice daily with a meal. Cost: ≈ $0,23/day
  17. Luteolin: 100-200mg/day, in divided doses with meals. Taking Luteolin with olive leaf extract may increase absorption.
  18. Pyrroloquinoline: 20-40mg/day, after meals.  Cost: ≈ $1,3/day at high dose. Consider taking with coQ10.
  19. Holy basil: contains Oleanolic Acid. 2-3 caps/day (Himalaya, Holy Basil , Cost: ≈ $0,5/day)
  20. Piperlongumine:  therapeutically effective amount could start as low as less than 0.1mg/kg/day and max. dose 2.4mg/kg/day. Cost
  21. Iodine1000 mcg/day
  22. Fucoidan: 3-6gr/day, in 3 or 4 divided doses.
  23. Ashwagandha: contains Withaferin A. Root and leaf extract. 1200mg-6000mg/day in 2 divided doses (afternoon and evening).  Cost: ≈ $0,43/day for 1500mg/day
Cautions regarding combining supplements and medication

If you take medications check if the supplement(s) can be combined with those drugs, especially with chemotherapy, diabetes medications, anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications (including aspirin), benzodiazepines etc.

💊 To combine various supplements add one at a time, start with the lowest possible dose and gradually increase if no side effect is observed.

To discontinue a supplement taper off by cutting to a half-dose for a week before stopping.

Dosage, but also time is crucial to produce a therapeutic effect.

Synergies

 Artemisinin with Honokiol
Because of the low bioavailability of Curcumin I suggest to combine curcumin with natural products that act synergistically:

** On days/cycles with Artemisinin avoid Luteolin, Curcumin, EGCg because these are iron chelators and could reduce the effectiveness of Artemisinin.

🏃 Aerobic activity improves outcomeAt least 20 studies of people with breast, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancer have suggested that physically active cancer survivors have a lower risk of cancer recurrence and improved survival compared with those who are inactive.
